Senate confirms Baucus — California hit with natural gas shortage

BAUCUS IS OUTTA HERE: The Senate voted 96-0 today to send one of its longest-serving members, Sen. Max Baucus, across the world to be the next U.S. ambassador to China, triggering a game of musical chairmanships that is expected to see Sen. Ron Wyden take over the Finance Committee and Sen. Mary Landrieu take the gavel at the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Doug Palmer has more on Baucus’s confirmation: http://politico.pro/1ki0cGz

Landrieu not getting ahead of herself: Landrieu says it’s too soon to get into specifics about her upcoming role as chairwoman. Asked how her transition is going, Landrieu said yesterday: “So far, so good. It’s going smoothly. But no specifics yet because it’s probably not going to happen until sometime next week.” She declined to give details about what new committee staff she will hire. “I’m still thinking about staffing,” she said.

— Sen. Lisa Murkowski, ENR’s top Republican, said she hasn’t yet talked with Landrieu about an agenda. “I’m very cognizant of the fact that she’s going to have to gear up” her team, Murkowski said yesterday. The Alaska Republican added that she heard Wyden is taking “a good number of folks” on ENR’s staff to the Finance Committee.

DAUGAARD HEADS GOVERNORS WIND GROUP: The Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition has selected South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard as its new chairman and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee as vice chairman. “We will continue working with Congress to extend the federal wind production tax credit so the industry can continue to produce rewarding careers throughout the nation,” Daugaard said in a statement. “We will also support efforts to modernize our nation’s electric transmission system that is so vital to economic development in Washington, South Dakota, and throughout the nation.” The coalition consists of 23 states, including most of the biggest wind producers.

Also in movers, shakers: The Energy and Enterprise Initiative, the free market climate and energy group headed by Bob Inglis, has picked up Kevin Croswhite as its Wisconsin state director. … Freshman Rep. Rick Nolan (D-Minn.) has joined the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition.
